Are the race tracks in Maryland in charge of what happens with the slot machines in Maryland? Every time I hear anything about slots, they always tie in what the race track owners would like to see. Who cares what they want to see, not me. Are we supposed to allow slots, but only if they go in the race tracks? If they go other places are the tracks still going to get a cut? Why are we even considering cutting the tracks in on the slots, if we get them?
Slot machines bring in lots of money evidently, the places that have them are always packed. I know my parents are comped meals, usually 4 a month, for all my inheritance they spend at Midway Slots in Delaware! I don't think that's a race track, it's a fair grounds maybe? What ever it is I can tell you this much, it aint Pimlico! It's clean, bright, and in a nice neighborhood, none of which is the case for Pimlico. Where are MD's other tracks? Are they the garden spot Pimlico is? I can't see people flocking there to play slots, or eat their comped meals at the seafood buffet.
Is the hold up with slots all over how to share the money with racing? Why racing, why not Burger Kings? I mean, you gamble when you go to either of them, why not give them both slots. Are the tracks privately owned? If they are I say earn your own money, slots are paying for things we all want, not your family business. Have you ever gone to a bar? I've been in a couple, I admit it, even if my mother may read this. Of course I think it's just her and Slammer that read it anyway! But my time hanging around bars I noticed people dumping tons of money into video slot and video poker machines. They were always being used, and they were entertainment purposes only! Just think if they paid off in cash!
Ever been to Vegas? Me and my family went for a funeral I think, they have slots everywhere, including the bathrooms at the airport! Stores that sell lotto tickets get a percentage the tickets they sell right? Why can't we do the same thing with slot machines? Put them in bars, like the ones they have now, and let them pay off, like they do now, but make it legal to do. Bar owner gets something, winner gets something, and we the people of Maryland get not only slots to play locally, but a nice revenue from other visitors. Anybody can get one, bars, grocery stores, churches, give em all slots. Let's not give the lobbyist free run with this. Make sure we put someone in charge the can tell the racing families no. I'm not working, I'd be will to tell them to go shit in their respective hats. Let's do this thing and make a fortune to be used on the people that really need a hand. Tell me where you think the money should go?

There is a race track at Harrington. It is harness racing a few weeks a tear. They recently expanded the slots part and did a great job. Delaware has no sales tax, I don't know if there is a connection but it frees money for other things. If you travel in De. you are bound to run into road work, Joe Biden's state is small but if you go to Harrington any day of the year except 2 holidays you will see just as many cars from Maryland as there are from DE. Who ar these people who are so perfect that they think they speak for the rest of the slobs who might play the slots and therefore be lost souls. Are their houses built of glass. Maybe they just spend so much time trying to run other people's morals and neglect their own. I wonder if they ever drink too much or maybe covet other peoples spouse? Let the voters decide if they want slots, put them in clean decent places like Harrington De. and build large parking lots, they will be needed.
In many places they have slots at the race tracks. I guess the thought is that it is already an established gambling area and meets the zoning requirements.
The racing industry enjoys having the slots in other states because they also help draw more people to the track to wager on the horse races. This makes the winners’ a purse larger which draws more horses and better horses which draws bigger crowds and more money.
The tracks get a portion of the slots proceeds much like lottery vendors do (I guess) which again leads to more money and bigger purses.
The problem is nobody wants the gambling element in their neighborhood. So to make it more acceptable the politicians have tied the slots money to go to the schools.
Maryland Speaker of the House Michael Busch lead the hold up of slots in the Ehrlich Administration. Even Gov. Martin O’Malley, who was then the Baltimore of Maryland, was against slots during the Ehrlich Administration. Now they are all singing a different tune.
Another hold up is who will control the slots. In some states the casinos are owned and run by private business. They make the lion’s share of the money and the state gets increased tax revenues. In Maryland they want the slots to be State run, much like the lottery. That way the State would get all the money, not just the tax revenue. The State feels it can better keep the criminal element out of the slots and casinos.
As for the money, it could be used to reduce taxes. It could be used to keep college expenses in check. It could be distributed among the jurisdictions in the State to supplement their budgets. This could increase benefits and wages for County employees. They could increase pension and health care benefits for our retired Deputies, Police and Fire Personnel. They pay their due while on the job. They should be taken care of in retirement.
How much of the Lottery revenue goes to schools? Did any of it ever make it to the schools? The tobacco settlement went well. The State spent tons of that money on tobacco education, right? Both sides criticize the other team for how they handle things, but both sides lie, but they do it to make their lies look better. If MD gets slots, the racing industry will get rich, the track owners will get rich, and the school systems that need help will still need help.
A good many citizens equate teachers , policemen and firemen with trash collectors when it comes to salaries. Each in their own way have important jobs. Fifty years ago teachers made about $4,000.00 a year, that was with 4 years of college. The others made about the same. Many years later a Baltimore Co. Exec put all of these jobs in the same category. If slots can raise these very important jobs to livable wages then let the people speak. By the people I don't mean politicians. The real people, the ones who teach your kids, protect your homes and families and put their lives on the line every day, don't forget how New York City looked when the trash people didn't pick up the trash. We drove 45 minutes into De. this week to play the slots, we live in Md. we counted at least every 2-3 cars had Md. tags. Delaware is making the money . The parking lot was full.

There was a news item today, September1 saying that the gambling boats offshore from Mississippi will lose enormous revenue because of the storm closing them. the Labor day weekend would have brought in enormous sums of money. If this is a big source of revenue for Mississippi why not Maryland. The nay sayers want the money but not the machinery in place to collect the revenue.
