Ask Baltimore County Council To Allow Backyard Chickens

I'm going to see what I have to do to be able to have a couple a few chickens in Baltimore County. Right now you need to have over an acre to have chickens, crazy. I can have 15 dogs, but can't have chickens, ridiculous. My county councilman has an icon for reducing global warming, how bout we start with chickens in the back yard? Drop your councilman a line, tell him you want chickens.

Seattle recently began allowing up to eight chickens in the city (hens only, please), up from three before. They're really very nice.

Your blog came up in my Google "chicken" news alert. You should check out my website at www.charmcitychickens.com. We've got a good group of chicken enthusiasts in the process of contacting all of our County Council candidates. Are you in District 6? If so, Todd Schuler and Andy Peet have both replied in support of changing the county code to allow backyard chickens.

Best of luck ... if you do have a couple hens, proclaim that they are actually fat parrots.

Jay - Thanks, I'm in district 5, so I'll be sending Vince Gardina an email. I was hoping to hook up with like minded chicken people.

von - I was going to claim I was chicken sitting.

Vince Gardina is against backyard chickens. I emailed him last year and he said straight out that he would never support such a change in the county code. However, Vince isn't running for a council seat this election, so you will have a new councilman in District 5 in the next few months. I have emailed all of our council candidates, and the only District 5 candidate who has replied to my emails was David Marks. And, David's response was, "would likely support this if there was an appropriate distance between the pens and other homes, as you described."

Check out this link for the list of candidates: http://www.elections.state.md.us/elections/2010/candidates/CountyCandidatesList.aspx?county=2010-1-04

Jay - I heard back from Ken Holt, Gordon Harden, and David Marks, all in favor, or willing to consider it.

Awesome! There are a lot of candidates in favor (or willing to consider), so let's hope the majority of those guys get voted in! In addition, they all have some great ideas on other issues that I have asked about.
