Free Time, Forced Civility, and Oil Usage Restrictions

We are trying to figure out what to do with our time now that the boy is finished school. I really shouldn't say we, it was the wife that spent so much time making sure he stayed on task, but hey, I live here too! I have marked certain milestones, like retirement, with changes in my appearance. Grew my hair, cut my hair. Grew a beard, shaved my beard. Grew...you get it. Well I'm running out of things to change, it's hot, it's humid, seemed like an easy choice.

Graduation was great, the boy was absolutely glowing, right along with us. The school has it down to a science, 577 kids, they'd better. One thing bothered me, well lots of things bothered me, but this one was acute. They made an announcement to please hold all clapping, all cheering, and all outbursts until the end of the ceremony as a courtesy to those listening for their childs name. It didn't happen! When I take over the world this will be a thing of the past. Your name is called and there is an outburst, you come into school with a parent on Monday to get yours. I'd like to force a little civility on people, even if they don't want it.

This spill in the Gulf is horrible. How can it be that something like this doesn't have an answer? We make the coal people have a plan for when things go wrong, they don't work, but we make them have one. BP had a plan to save walruses, tons of those in the Gulf. Did the USA restrict things like travel, fuel consumption during WW2, pretty sure they did? Stop all non essential air travel, tonight! Give us coupons for gasoline, use your coupons and you either stay home, or you trade with someone else for theirs. These aren't big problems, just ones that need serious answers.

I agree with you.

30 plus years ago after the oil spill (dump) from Valdez, we saw the beginning of gasoline wars and prices going crazy at the pump.

That spill is still haunting the environment to this day.

Now it is closer to "home" for most Americans (map and location wise) and we are going to get slammed at the pump again.

And another 30 plus years of cleanup.

You are right....there oughta be a plan in place that works.

Glad the graduation was wonderful. A very proud moment for your family.

Another unsolicited opinion: -- Shave it for summer, grow it in winter.

I also hate that stupid Tony Hayward ad -- does he think that accent will make us accept what he's saying? Liar, Liar, pants on fire!
Glad the Boy's graduation went well. Your suggestion about how to handle the cheering is exactly what I did when I was a principal -- they were warned in advance. Once they knew I meant business, it never happened again.
Be well.

Anne - It must be nice to do business without having to worry about a contingency plan if things go south.

Muffie - I worry about what comes next if a little show of respect is too much to ask. Well done at your school.

Hi Andy,
Agree on travel restrictions on unnessary plane journeys, holiday at home enjoy exploring where you live.
We need to use less oil, om the list is the huge amount used for food production.
More boats less planes and wind and sunpower, electric cars there are lots of possibilities.
Love,
Herrad
did you know that 40% of BP is owned by US companies so Obama talking the share price down will hurt american shareholders

Herrad - It's part of our culture here. Sales calls from coast to coast to sell things. Politicians flying all over the world to look at things. We need people to use less, but will they be willing? Politicians here only claim to have out best interest in mind, unfortunately not true.

Hi Andy,

You are correct about politicians lying to us.
This makes me wonder why we keep electing these freeloaders.
